Our 1960s Ranch Renovation: Interiors #2

In my last post on our 1960s ranch renovation I teased you with a pic of our renovated kitchen.Instead, we’re going start the renovation posts by bringing you through our front door and into the foyer … just like we would any first-time guest.

This allowed us to “borrow” some of the air space in the dining room and give it to the foyer.

On either side of the chest we placed our 2 extra dining room chairs that we can conveniently pull into the dining room when needed.

I hope that this post helps you better envision how a few small … and a few not-so-small changes … can make a big difference in transforming your 1960s ranch foyer.

Our 1960s Ranch Renovation: Interiors #1

When we did our post on the renovation of our front elevation (Rebirth: Our 1960s Ranch House Renovation) we had no idea how many people would ask about the interiors. Some may ask how this has anything to do with redeeming your ground … but I assure you it does.

Our 1960s Ranch Renovation: Interiors #1
Painted the kitchen cabinets … that must have been built onsite because every drawer & every cabinet door was a different size. But friends & family would typically enter our home by going through the carport, through the laundry room, and into the kitchen (good thing they were good friends & family!).

Being the outdoor guy … and having spent a ton of time redeeming my ground outside (see what I did there?!?)

How'd This Couple Make Over Their Ranch House on a Budget? So

Three hours east of New Orleans is a little town perched on the bluffs overlooking Mobile Bay named Fairhope, Alabama."There's a lot of old people, and then young people like us buying the ranch that’s a little further away and fixing it up."But before the Haneses could do just that, they had to find the house.

Then this one—an old midcentury ranch for sale by the owner, within walking distance of "downtown"—cropped up.From there it was buckets of Benjamin Moore paint, hand-me-down furniture for days, and midcentury accents—sourced on sites like Overstock, Etsy, and Gilt—to keep the mismatched antiques feeling modern.

How To Give A Boring 1960s Ranch House A Stylish Exterior Makeover

It’s not the kind of house that screams, “Emphasize my architectural details and singular flair!” Because on this house, details and flair are nowhere to be found. But still, every time I drove up to the house, it bugged me how much I disliked it.

How To Give A Boring 1960s Ranch House A Stylish Exterior Makeover
The Concept:Take a dull 1960s ranch house and give it a bright, retro makeover with cool, textural details.

The Details:As finishing touches, I tried to find inexpensive accents that would really pop on the house (basically, bang-for-buck maximization). So I picked up some a carriage-house style garage door hardware kit, attached it to the door, and presto: non-boring.

A Ranch House Transformation

Our 1960s Ranch Renovation: Interiors #3

Besides maybe what we did in our kitchen (see upcoming Post #4), the greatest impact from a visual and functional perspective of our 1960s ranch renovation was the transformation of our small den into a Great Room.Although this added to the interest of our back elevation, it was also one of the larger line items of our renovation budget. So with all that, that’s how we transformed our small den into a truly great Great Room.

An Interior Designer's Dream Home Remodel

We built and moved into a guest house at the back of the home during the remodel, which was a labor of love. The result was worth it: a gorgeous mountain modern retreat to complement the allure of the already-to-die-for landscape.

An Interior Designer's Dream Home Remodel
The interior felt dark and dated with wall-to-wall carpet, heavy dark wood, ample patterned wallpaper, and swathes of solid dark brick.

Ranch reimagined

Ranch reimagined Home + Garden March 31, 2022After two major renovations, a 1960s Lansdowne home embodies indoor-outdoor living at its best.“My entire 20s was spent overseas,” says Klanecky, a Maryland native who came to Charlotte in 2015.

“I just somehow knew it was meant to be my house,” Klanecky says, and sure enough, the sale did fall through.

I’d just been thinking about it for so long, over the course of 20 years, that I had a very clear vision of exactly what I wanted,” Klanecky says.

As an added benefit, a new friendship was forged during the renovation: The home’s previous owners moved just across the street.
