From Dull to Dramatic

In my mind, I pictured all of the bright green foliage in our back yard popping off the dark siding.We love how Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore (SW 7069) completely transformed our 1980s contemporary.Now we only need the new roof to complement the dark exterior (hopefully in the near future).A clear view of the bronze gutters again the Iron Ore siding.

Updating an 80s contemporary home

My wife and I have found a home we really like, except this 80's contemporary style.It's a solid home with a great layout.We want to make an offer with the intent to drop some dollars to update the exterior to a fresh look.

In Stone Mountain's shadow, massive 1980s modern wants to party

If glass blocks as building materials ever came back in style, this 1980s modern next door to Stone Mountain could be Atlanta’s epicenter of cool.Back in 1986, an ad executive had this pad custom-designed to maximize uniqueness and privacy, spending a reported $600,000 (and that’s not adjusted for inflation).Behind the curved glass monolith, the floating stairs are stylish but ridiculously unfriendly to kids (or tipsy parents).

The land itself stretches for 11 wooded acres, pretty much literally in the grand monadnock’s shadow.Other Atlanta listings this year have proven that ’80s modern can be revived in attractive ways, so there’s hope yet.

80's Contemporary Exterior Update

Our home desperately needs an update but I'm struggling with material and color.My taste is more cottage than contemporary so I'd like ideas about what compromises can be made that would work with the current style.I'm thinking stone accents (I prefer a stacked or ledge stone look), but I'm not sure where they would look best.We'd like no maintenance so we're thinking vinyl but we're not sure what style would be best.

We will also be replacing windows, preferably with a cottage style with top grids unless someone tells me that's a bad option.

The house we ended up buying (and renovating) was something that jumped out for many reasons: the size, the price, & the style.Exterior stairs lead up to the main floor (the foyer, kitchen, dining room, living room, half bath, master bed, master bath, and porch.)The half bathroom access is from the living room (which I think is kind of awkward.)

(The living room is pretty dark for a house with so many windows.)The smaller of the two guest bedrooms (front of the house).

Some things I'm contemplating:- Painting the trim/gutters cream (instead of the ugly brown)- New garage door (Carriage style?- Adding a wider head-casing to the window and garage trim (more craftsman style)- Changing up the siding (Some stone veneer lower?- Adding a pergola over the garage to help fill some of the dead space above itThank you for any feedback!!

how to update 80's contemporary house

Want to give a facelift to this 80’s contemporary house.Thinking replace the date rocks with wood accent panels (or look a like wood), replace front doors and new landscaping.

For siding I’m thinking horizontal and maybe a dark wood look a like panels.

I think the color tone of second picture attached.

It’s tough to redesign these especially with all the windows!

Updating 1980 contemporary home exterior color

We love the floor plan of our contemporary home, but the outside is in desperate need of a little TLC.Currently ,our home is original cedar siding (and obviously needs to be replaced due to areas of rot, etc.).

It is also all one color - brown, brown, brown!

The trim on the windows, the gutters, the siding - everything is the same color brown!How can I update the color pallet of our home so it's something we can be proud of?

Help! Color reccos for 80's contemporary exterior

Hubs & I recently bought this house in Northern NJ and really want to paint the exterior a new color so it doesn't feel so gingerbread house-y.But stuck on actual color.Roof staying the same, is a light brown/taupe color but honestly you can't really see it too much so idk how important color matching is.Planning to replace front & garage doors.We really like the idea of a dark grey with light wood/cedar doors for contrast, but struggling to find the right color...keeping the trim same color as siding to look more modern... picked up a few samples (pictured below) but none of them fit the bill (middle 2 are absolute no's, I love the far left (SW urban bronze) but husband hates it (thinks it looks too muddy), far right (SW peppercorn) feels too cement-y / light (light grey on this style of house easily feels dated, which I'm concerned about)Any dark grey color recommendations are welcome, as are alternative color ideas that would make this 80s baby look chic and modern!We've toyed with a warm white color scheme too, with black window framing.... but just don't know!

Shachar Rozenfeld Architects have sent us some before and after photos of the contemporary renovation they designed for a 1980s house in Ramat Hasharon, Israel.Furthermore it hints at the upcoming space, creates visual contact with the main seating area and further enhances the openness of the space.A glass banister was put in place of the bent steel baluster that separated the seating area and the entryway, to create a clearer bond between the two.

Prior to the renovation, this room was the master bedroom with an adjacent balcony.

The top level has become a large and spacious master bedroom by removing all of the inner walls that made up three bedrooms.

My husband and I are interested in this fantastic home built in 1983.We love the interior and the lot but the exterior falls flat for us.

We live in the suburbs of Philly in a 1980's contemporary-style home that we bought last Summer.The TnG cedar siding is pretty, but we want to get away from the maintenance issues (rotting, woodpeckers, bees, repeated staining, etc).We were thinking about stucco or HardiPanels...does anybody have a professional opinion?Other options?See the photos for more insight...unfortunately, we lost the Flowering Cherry tree two weeks (3rd photo) prior to the most recent tree debacle (last photo), so it will need to be replaced, as well.

Contemporary Home Makeover

That’s what first attracted the owner of this contemporary home makeover to the property.That’s where the project got interesting – the house was an aging 1980s contemporary, the kind of look that turns some people off.

But together, we discovered that the basic massing and details of the house were a great starting point for a fresh, updated, contemporary design.

Second, the new garage could be attached to the existing garage.Third, the new master suite was more private and had better views of the west side of the property (something the owners wanted).

Exterior Remodeling

Looking for remodel ideas to convert an 80's contemporary style exterior to more of a craftsman / arts & crafts style.The current siding is white Cedar tongue and groove (not T111) all painted brown.

We struggled with buying a lot and building, and I had looked at Timber frame Homes (a builder timberbuilt is nearby) , log homes, etc.

I have framed houses before as side job for summer work in college and although I'm fairly handy didn't want a 30 year old house and to do a lot of remodeling.

It was trade offs like this that brought us to buy, and now we are facing an exterior remodel, a possible addition, and a kitchen makeover - the not so nice parts of the house.

How do I break up the oppressive roof in this 80s contemporary?

I love the dramatic high ceilings that this roof line creates, but it also makes for an imposing welcome.There is a room over the garage, so a window is possible-- perhaps a larger version of the window to the right of the chimney?

Or draw even more attention to the roof?

Also considering alternative paint/shingle color schemes, for example, navy-gray paint with light grey shingles.

(I do like the original wood color, but it's in bad shape, which is not obvious here because it's wet).

Ideas to update the exterior of our big brown 80's contemporary

We fell in love with the unique layout of our home, but the outside is very outdated and VERY brown.We like the contemporary look but would also like the home to fit into the neighborhood a little more.

Looking for ideas to bring our 80's contemporary to a more modern contemporary look.I've played with photoshop adding metal corrugated siding and cement board to areas but just can't seem to get anything that looks right.We will paint a dark grey and add a frosted garage door once we figure out materials for the rest of the house.
