Master Bathroom Design Decisions

We've shared some of the smaller elements of our planned master bathroom design over the year or so, all in anticipation of our eventual project. However, we absolutely want to do wainscoting of some type in our master bathroom.

It’s a mix of glazed tile and stone tile, and the glazed tiles are so shiny! Now that it’s finished, I think I can finally screw the vanity to the wall and be done with it.

The Right Height to Wainscot Depending on Your Wall

In the bathroom, wainscoting can add a chic alternative to tile or wallpaper. For a bathroom wall, aim to keep wainscoting height to one-third of the entire wall height.

The Right Height to Wainscot Depending on Your Wall
So if your wall is 12 feet from floor to ceiling, you’ll install wainscoting from the top of the baseboard to the four-foot mark.

Make Marks For Wainscoting Height and StudsFirst, measure the wall, then measure to the height you’d like for the wainscoting. You’ll glue the wall panels until you reach a stud, where you’ll nail in the wainscoting with the nail gun.

Tulip Poplar Bathroom Renovations: Shower, Beadboard, and Tile

During this phase of the Tulip Poplar Bathroom renovations, we installed Kerdi waterproof membrane on the shower walls and floor, sloped the shower floor, installed and painted beadboard, and laid tile.Josh installed a shelf above the beadboard – it will be perfect for holding toiletries or a small bud vase.

Josh spent a lot of time carefully installing Kerdi membrane – this material covers the shower walls and floor to waterproof it.

Next, Josh sloped the shower floor with “deck mud,” which is about a 1:6 mix of cement and sand.

For the floor, we chose a cream colored marble tile and for the shower walls, we selected large white ceramic tiles.

Green Wainscot in a Bathroom Brightens Up a Small Space

“I wanted that to be the focal point.”Since Jessica wanted to create “a soothing environment,” she knew she wanted to accent the bathroom with green, her favorite color. After testing a few verdant tones from Clare, she ultimately selected Hibe Vibe, which is a near-perfect match for the home’s exterior.Focus on the DetailsThough Jessica was initially drawn to wainscot in the bathroom, she ultimately decided to cover all of the marvelous millwork in High Vibe.

Instead, she picked up an affordable resin stamp and pressed pops of High Vibe on one white wall.Rounding out the look was brass hardware, which Jessica says was “the prettiest combination” with High Vibe.

But something still seemed “off” about the whole thing — the yellow chair rail, yellow tile and yellow lower wall. The yellow tile seemed bright and cheerful, but the yellow chair rail and wall looked dull.

Half Bath Progress
That window casing is another reason I decided to try the white on the chair rail and lower walls.I couldn’t imagine the window casing in white with a narrow little apron up against a yellow chair rail.

With the window trim and the chair rail white, it better disguises the narrow apron under the window.

April showers

The goal of many bathroom renovations that we design is to create a bigger and better outfitted shower area.In one Mountain Brook, Alabama we designed the interior renovation and addition for, each bedroom suite is complimented with an adjacent bathroom.

April showers
In each, well-appointed showers play a prominent role.

In the home’s Master Bathroom we went for total luxury and covered the walls in slabs of honed Carrara Bianca marble. We had the high windows in this shower cased in tile rather than use wood trim which could become damaged over time.

Master the Art Of Subway Tile

Adding tile wainscoting is a perfect way to change the look of a bathroom.Unlike floors or showers, tile wainscoting doesn’t have to withstand foot traffic or daily soaking.

Master the Art Of Subway Tile
2 / 16Plan the layoutBefore starting any tile project, it’s important to check that the floor is level and the walls are flat.

Another thing to check at this stage is how your cap tile will look when it butts into your window and door moldings.

Then stack a column of tile, starting with the base and ending with the cap.

Recessed Panel Wainscoting With Tile Accent

I prefer MDF over solid wood lumber for wainscoting because of how beautifully and perfectly smooth it sands. The first thing I did was fill all of the joints with wood filler. And as I’ve said before, I use a very liberal amount of wood filler when I do projects like this. While the wood filler was drying, I added the moulding on the inside edges of all of the sections. Then I used wood filler to cover all of those nail holes.

A Bungalow Era Bath is Timeless

The typical bungalow-era bathroom is a simple space given to sanitary white surfaces and little ornament.Bathrooms changed between the Victorian 1890s and the modern 1920s; the pull-chain toilet gave way to low tanks, and the combination bathtub/shower arrived.
