I’ve been giving the brick fireplace in our Living Room the stink-eye for six years.Now my brick fireplace is the perfect balance of creamy goodness and texture.

I didn’t saturate the brick, allowing some of the natural color and texture of the brick and grout to still show through.I merely wanted to help the brick mesh with the room by not being such a focal point.

Of course painting the brick has opened up a whole new can of worms.

I’m excited to share all the details of this Black & White Mantel Decor, a look that is perfect for Fall and features my current favorite color palette.I thought it would be fun to incorporate a few touches of Plaid to my mantel decor, mixing different Plaid patterns with modern home decor pieces.

This Adam Lippes for Target Black Plaid Pillow was the inspiration for the entire look.

I used an existing large basket I had and filled it with the coordinating Adam Lippes for Target Black & White Plaid Throw along with another cozy blanket.

I kept the other decor simple by keeping with the black and white color palette, mixing multiple patterns with various shapes and textures.

Enduring Charm LLC Modern Mantel

My client wanted to replace this builder-special brick fireplace facade with something more modern and fresh.The mantel itself included an upper shelf and a spare, modern take on pilasters.

In the end the design offered a bold and modern take on a fireplace mantel, and made a statement in this living room.My client wanted a modern mantel to replace the tired and dated brick around this fireplace.

After reviewing inspirational pictures from various sources we settled on a design of white painted wood and white tile.

The room was stuck in the 80s with brown paneled walls and a large brick fireplace.The goal was to update it to a modern brick fireplace.One item that made the top of the to-do list was a painted white brick fireplace.We were deciding between 2 different ways to proceed with the fireplace update.

We did not want to extend the progress of our family room remodel, we wanted to move forward with the white brick for the fireplace.

Condition your wood with Minwax Pre Stain Wood conditioner, follow all the listed product instructions.After the wood conditioner has been on the proper amount of time, you can now stain your wood.

With the shelf piece lying good side down on a flat surface, place the front piece perpendicular to the shelf piece.Now flip it so the right side is up and anchor it to you brick mantel through the top of the shelf board directly into the brick mantel.See I told you an easy wood mantel in no time at all!

I used a hand saw, drill, electric sander, 2" finishing nails, 2" wood screws, 1/2" wood screws, and wood glue.I wanted the mantle to be as wide as possible in the front to cover the existing brick mantle supports, so I went with a 10" wide board.I used the 1x8x8" board for the top of my mantle (what everything is setting on).Check Pinterest and search "diy mantle box" or "diy wood mantle".

I love that it totally covers up our old brick supports and transformed our fireplace!

A dramatic fireplace makeover {white moulding & black mantel

It seems like the perfect high impact focal point, so to enhance the fireplace and make it really stand out, I added a bunch of moulding and painted the mantel black.I have to say though that my love for a black mantel is directly inspired from Sarah of The Yellow Cape Cod.

For this project I used my 4″ wide strips of MDF to frame out the mantel.Then for an extra smooth finish I rolled the white paint onto the walls with a little fluffy roller for textured walls.I didn’t roll any black on, I used a paint brush for everything.

This wall is about to get covered with black shiplap, we’re installing a faux railroad tie mantel and surrounding the fireplace with a nice wood surround and marble tile.I wasn’t there for the build on the fireplace surround but you can probably figure out how it was constructed.

The paint sheen is flat, I feel like using a flat/ or matte paint sheen really makes the brick look natural and not necessarily painted.

Then using your paint brush or toothbrush work the excess brick paint into the mortar cracks.I actually don’t even mind the funny little white fireplace ledge or the fireplace insert now (although it does need some TLC) .

How to Paint a Brick Fireplace

I was completely shocked when his family agreed to let me paint the fireplace after only a 10 minute discussion!If you leave the debris/dirt then the paint will not tick to the brick and it will chip.

Paint the firebox (the inside of the fireplace)It is important that you use heat resistant paint if you are going to paint the firebox.The black is definitely more of a deeper black compared to the paint we used on the brick, but I actually love the depth and dimension is brings to the fireplace.It took us only two days to paint the entire fireplace, but we worked non-stop!
