Well…I am thrilled to announce that my DIY, built-in storage bench is now complete.Essentially, the idea of a formal dining room was no longer serving my family and I.The concept of a built-in dining bench thoughtfully relocates the furniture to the focal wall of my dining room, while the storage component of the bench allows the space to be multi-functional.By providing office storage (laptop, paperwork, etc), the dining table serves as a desk and a place to dine (once the office materials are stowed in the banquette).If you would like more DIY bench tutorials, click here for the custom mudroom bench we built a few years ago.

How to Build a Banquette Dining Bench

We wanted an L-shaped bench, so we measured both lengths as well as the depth and height.I started with a standard, comfy seat depth of 18 inches and added 4 inches to that to account for pillows.Normal seat height is about 18 inches from the floor, so I wanted our bench to be 18 inches AFTER we added a cushion.A few notes on length: Will you want to add trim to your bench?

For the ends, instead of just painting over the mdf (it would be very bumpy and look unfinished), we added trim.

Entryway Tour + My DIY Built In Closet Bench

** I built this DIY bench and completed the foyer makeover late 2019, before any Covid-19 restrictions were in place.I’m sharing our entryway tour today and how I created this cozy space with a built-in bench in our closet!

For the bench I used 2 x 2’s (for the frame), 1 x 3 (for the finishing trim) and a high quality pine board for the bench seat.Instead of building the support inside the closet and securing it to wall as the first step, I built the frame first.
