Should I combine Kitchen & Dining Room into one large room?

I recently purchased a home with an older kitchen, and an adjacent dining room.I'd like to open up the wall between the two and make it more of an open space, as well as put sliding doors to the outside/backyard eventually.I think it will be more of a gathering space since we rarely use a formal dining room.

There is a step ladder located underneath the pull out garbage can in the toe kick to access the taller areas.The pantry can be rolled into for easy access of food items, open shelves provide best visibility.
