A collaborative proposal by Erginoglu & Çalışlar and IND [Inter.National.Design] for a swimming pool under an inverted dome at an Istanbul primary school has been shortlisted for an award at this year's World Architecture Festival, which will take place in Singapore from 3-5 October (+ slideshow).The architects proposed to partially embed the swimming pool in a grassy mound, with a reflective roof structure bulging down to meet it.

The pool was intended to provide a striking entrance to the campus of Koç Primary School, which is run by the Vehbi Koç Foundatıon.

The swimming pool has been shortlisted for WAF's World Building of the Year Award but it will not now be built due to the school's budget constraints.

The East End’s first public fitness facility – complete with an Olympic-size swimming pool, aerobic and weight training rooms and a rock climbing wall – is coming to Suffolk County Community College’s Riverhead campus.The $18 million facility will also be available for use by county residents and local governments, making it the first public athletic and fitness facility of its kind in the five East End towns.

“The day is finally here,” said Shaun McKay, president of Suffolk County Community College.

In addition, the East End has no public fitness facility of this kind in any of its five towns.Bridget Fleming, Southampton Town Councilwoman, said that a public fitness facility is “desperately needed.”“Not a week goes by that someone doesn’t complain that we don’t have an indoor swimming pool,” Fleming said.
