DIY Kitchen Island with Trash Storage

I excited to start the new year by sharing with you the FREE build plans for this DIY Kitchen Island with Trash Storage!Right before Thanksgiving I built this island and it has made the biggest difference in the functionality of our kitchen.

One of the mandatory design features I created was the pull-out trash storage.

Previously, our trash was sitting against a wall and not only was it unsightly, it created wasted space around it.It increases counters space, storage, and makes entire space more social.

Trash Can Cover

Once we made over our kitchen island, our ugly trash can suddenly became uglier.Mike had a great idea to create a trash can cover that would match the island, making it look more like a purposeful piece of furniture, rather than a plastic, smelly box:) Here’s what our trash can looked like originally:And here is what it looks like now, after Mike worked his magic:Pretty, right?

Mike started by taking some melamine from our concrete counters {that material has come in handy for quite a few projects} and built 2 boxes.He started with more melamine and traced a box through the center that would be about the size of our current trash can.

We bought two small hinges and Mike secured them to the backside of the new lid.

I perused through many-an-awesome kitchen and found lots of inspiration for kitchen islands with so many different ideas and options.I also like that it has lots of drawers because my kitchen has lots of cabinets, but only a couple of drawers.So this has just ended up being the girls’ little play kitchen area.(plural)Except sometimes it looks like this, soooo…This was my play kitchen when I was a little girl.I think I’ll just leave this post with this terribly awkward photo of me with my play kitchen as a child.
