Help with kitchen design/ family room step down

We are remodeling our kitchen which has a step down to our family room.Right now, there is a railing that divides the two rooms next to the step but it looks dated and we'd like to remove it and do something else.

Help with kitchen design/ family room step down
Our KD had suggested a cabinet peninsula but we don't want the family room to feel closed off from the kitchen.

We could extend the step or do something else -- searching for suggestions!

(Our new kitchen will be white cabinets, dark island with marble counters -- traditional/modern feel.

But the revitalization of the sunken living room has more to do with necessity than mere decorating aesthetics.Turning heads and sparking conversation, the sunken living room can play host to some intimate and dreamy evenings right at home! The modern version of the sunken living room is probably more of a step-down living room where the difference in the height levels of the sunken area and the surrounding area is not that stark.

Big step down from kitchen to living room, Please help.

So my house was built in the 70's and has a lot of different odd levels, such as the kitchen which is a separate slab higher than the rest of the main floor.I am thinking of adding a step down into the living room like the one on the side to keep the space open or at least a partial step but m looking for other option.

Big step down from kitchen to living room, Please help.
I know the step is a necessity, but should I add a small bookshelf or something else so that no one backs there chair off the ledge?

The first picture is just to show the old rail and height of the ledge.Ignore the floor damage in the last picture it has since been fixed.

Treacherous step down from living room into dining room

I am so tired of warning guests to "watch your step".I need suggestions on the best way of distinguishing the step down into the dining room so it isn't a fall down.

Treacherous step down from living room into dining room
I have thought of staining a 3" strip by the edge of the step.I don't think changing the flooring in the dining room will work since it would chop up the space.

Welcome any suggestions.
