Our Home Office / Guest Room Makeover Is Done!

It’s me, all the way in Richmond, shouting at the top of my lungs that the office/guest room/playroom makeover is finished.So it’s not a bad spot to spend 80+ hours a week logging blog time, playtime, and accommodating the occasional guest or two.The whole office side of the room really works perfectly for us- and there’s enough room on the rug behind us for all sorts of playtime with Baby P (since one of us is usually on Clara duty while the other blogs away at the desk).

And you know I love a good ceramic animal (or four) to swank up a room.

It’s another really important storage piece in the room (those baskets from Michael’s are filled with paperwork and office accessories that we like to have on hand- plus it houses our printer).

Kiddo Guest + Playroom Update

We moved the playroom stuff out of this room to give Marigold a space and we combined it with our kiddo guest room.The majority of the playroom stuff that we were using was our art stuff.We added the shelves from our previous playroom as well as this built-in desk to use as an art space.We spend hours on the bunk beds where she thinks of names for every single animal.

We painted them to match the bunk beds so they’d all family together.

We originally wanted to include a few shots of the office as it looks when it’s converted into a guest bedroom in this morning’s post, but we just snapped too many pics to squeeze it all in!Here’s the full-sized sofa bed all folded out and dressed for company (with linens that we already owned from the full sized bed that used to exist in the space before the room was converted into a two-person office).We also toss our files and paperwork into the open desktop cubby or our file boxes underneath the desk when guests come to stay.It’s easy to wonder how much spare space is in a small 10 x 10.5′ room that has to house a slim two-person desk and a fold-out full sized bed.

Our Combined Playroom and Guest Room

You may have an extra room in your home, but you don’t necessarily want it to be a guest room that never gets used.For us, we really wanted a playroom for the kids, but we also wanted a guest room for when family came into town.We also have a big closet in this room where we store a lot of toys.

This room is mostly used for a playroom so the fact that it folds up into this small cabinet/storage situation is ideal for us.

The kids have a ton of room to play, and we can store toys in the bottom drawer.

Once the basement fell through, we knew we needed a common space for me to work and Rosie to play.I need a productive work space.Here’s the space I have to work with:This room has the most natural light in the house, which I love!While designing for a kid is a really new thing to me, I’m trying to think ahead to what she’ll enjoy in the months and years to come.Now, I can just flip around in my chair to see her easily and it maximizes floor play space to be up against the wall.

Plus, I’d kinda feel dishonest if I only focused on “finished” rooms in my house.And if what they (the professionals) say is true, a room is never really finished anyways…you’re always tweaking it.

The bed frame was actually Handy Hubby’s in college and was wood veneer in pretty bad shape.It’s the same frame/mirror as in our living room – only I painted the living room one black and this one white.

Finally, the play area includes a hand painted train table, a reading spot and a bookcase for toys.
