Owning an Old House: Charming Love Affair or Expensive Money Pit

" " Nearly 14 percent of homes in the U.S. were built before 1940, which means they are closing in on the century mark.Knowing what to watch for can be key to owning an old house.Paul Brennan /NeedpixFrom a 1920s bungalow or stately three-story Victorian to a rustic stone farmhouse, a lot of us love old houses for their sturdiness, quirky charm and connection to history.

And fortunately, there are a lot of venerable old homes still standing all over the world. But old houses also have a potentially significant downside, especially for unwary first-time homeowners, in that expensive problems are often tucked away inside the walls or under the floors.

7 Things Nobody Tells You About Renovating an Old Farmhouse

You’ve found it: a beautiful, rambling old farmhouse, with wide-plank wood floors, original paned windows, maybe a big barn. Here’s what to know before embarking on a farmhouse renovation (and what to leave as-is).Those wood floors might need to replaced.Keep in mind that an old farmhouse (or any house built before 1978) may have lead paint on the walls—or asbestos.

The Farmhouse

According to historical records, this old Plantation Plain-style farmhouse in rural Hancock County, Georgia dates back to at least the mid-1800s.A kitchen and bathroom were added to the rear of the house as well as a porch on one side.

The Farmhouse
It appears from what’s left behind and the partially painted front, that the farmhouse was in the midst of a renovation before it was completely abandoned.

In July 2022, the property was sold and the new owner plans to continue to restore the old farmhouse. For more abandoned places from Georgia, check out my books Abandoned Georgia: Exploring the Peach State and Abandoned Georgia: Traveling the Backroads.

Is Your Old House Haunted?

Spirit SkepticsOf course, not everyone gives credence to the idea of a haunted house.“We consulted house clearers, who told us the spirits thought we were tearing the house down.

The house feels amazingly different, and our dogs will now go to the parts of the house that had the vortex.

The Fallingstar family’s experience also illustrates the fact that not every haunted house is ancient and eerie-looking.Fifteen years ago, New York lifestyle publicist Wendy Knight lived in a large and haunted Victorian house in Vergennes, Vermont.

1900 Farmhouse Renovation: Living & Dining Room Before and After

Farmhouse Living & Dining Room Before and AfterHere's where we started - what this area looked like when we bought the property:You walked right into one big rectangular room from an off-center front door.Since the door was off-center, the room to the right above seemed like it should be the living room, which is what I originally said in the whole farmhouse before tour here. The Faux Shiplap & PaintingTo cover the modern texture as well as the mismatched wood walls we decided to recreate the wood walls under the wallboard with a faux shiplap look.Farmhouse Living Room Before and After PhotosOkay, let's get to some of the amazing before and afters of how this area went from not-sure-what-it-was to definite farmhouse!

Farmhouse in Indiana

In the past two years we restored an 1890 farmhouse in central Indiana. The acreage has been fenced for pasture and planted with native Indiana trees. We increased the opening between the living room and the family room, and added a second window in the family room, which also improved its relationship to the front porch. The reproduction-style, yet modern, Elmira stove contributes to the old farmhouse appearance of the kitchen. The Indiana owners relocated the bathroom access and created a niche for a refrigerator clad to look like an icebox.

Unexpected Old Stone House Interior

We know not to judge a book by its cover, or in this case a home by its exterior. This 200-year-old stone house in Linescio, Switzerland certainly proves that better than most anything we’ve seen.Even as you walk around the outside and see the crumbling stone walls right in front of your face, you’d have a hard time believing it was recently renovated.

Real home: a traditional Welsh cottage gets a vintage

‘I had my dream of what I pictured a Welsh cottage to be – beams, an inglenook fireplace, stone walls and lots of character, and there wasn’t any here because it had been given a terrible 1960s makeover,’ she shudders.(Image credit: Huntley Hedworth)‘There were polystyrene tiles on the ceiling, plastic tiles on the floors, all of the doors were covered in hardboard panels and the fireplaces had been boarded up.‘I wanted our home to look like an old Welsh cottage and a lot of them had wallpaper,’ she says. They kept the original suite and added the tiles and William Morris print curtains (Image credit: Huntley Hedworth)‘When we first moved in we had to make do and mend. This way of life, in their carefully restored home, seems to be perfect for Mike and Mitzi.

What deceptively looks like just an old farm house in Nashville, Tennessee has caught the eyes of many. When Terry Jo and David Bichell purchased this old farm house, they wanted to have it remodeled — while keeping its natural rustic charm.Just like other rooms in the house, the master bedroom has minimal items and has an airy, breezy look to it.The modern, shiny, state-of-the-art appliances in the kitchen are nothing like what you see in an average old farm house.

An Old World Design Element I'm Obsessed With And Tried HARD To

I found some photos of interior shutters and fell in LOVE with the idea. They bring in so much warmth and interest in a way that feels really solid, grounded totally classic, and yet unexpected.design by anna cayzer | via flickrThere is certainly a romance to them – perhaps because it feels more like a European design element.Having shades in addition to the shutters I think would take away from the charm and might look a little dumb.

I’m sad that it might not happen, but I promised myself that I will SOMEWHERE, someday 🙂 Just might not be this farmhouse.

Cozy life in old farmhouse 〛◾ Photos ◾ Ideas ◾ Design

Despite the rapid development of modern technologies and new technical construction possibilities, people still continue to move from the city to the province and restore old houses. This farmhouse is almost 300 years old, but one Swedish family found it attractive to make it their country home, and lovingly repaired it.

This New Bed for the James Blake House—Boston's Oldest Home— Was

Built in the mid-1600s, James Blake House is the oldest residence of its kind in Boston and one of the country’s few remaining examples of West England country framing. However, for a 300-year-old home like the James Blake House, doing so isn’t as easy as going to the store and picking one out.To create the bed, woodworker Lee McColgan researched the furniture of William Searle and Thomas Dennis, two Ipswich-based furniture makers.Cole researched the intricate designs and landed on the work of two Colonial-era Ipswich, Massachusetts–based furniture makers, William Searle and Thomas Dennis.
