Turn a Dining Room into a Playroom

A friend, who is converting her dining room into an art/craft/homework room, gave me an idea…why not turn our seldom-used dining room into a playroom?Here’s how to turn a dining room into a playroom and finally put a lonely room to good use!

Now, I have to say: I loved our dining room.We used our dining room maybe once or twice a year, and otherwise it was just used as a storage room.

Here’s what the living room looked like:After thinking and measuring and thinking some more, I decided to do it – put the dining room in the living room and put the playroom in the dining room.

Formal Dining Room to Functional Play Room

She has been wanting to turn her formal dining room into a play room for several years now.All the while they had a formal dining room and living room at the front of their home that were rarely used.

When you first walk into her home you enter the formal living area and then just past that is the formal dining room.She wanted to remove the formal living area and make it the dining room/living room and make the old dining room the play room.Previously, the play “room” was a little nook off of their family room.

How do I convert this formal dining room into a playroom?

We downsized and need to make this feel like a playroom for the kids.Any ideas on what to do with this room are welcomed.

It's the first room you see when you walk in the house so I want it to be neat and cool looking still!

We are taking out the chandelier and adding a pendant light... Help!

Elements of Style

Just because a room was meant to be used as one thing does not mean you HAVE to use it as such.Now this room is not only functional for the family but beautiful, as it’s right off the main family room area.

This image is also in the book, from designer Cecilia Walker, showing a typical formal room that was not meant to be a “play space” turned into a billiards room!

Which brings up homes that do NOT have any spaces that go unused– like mine.

Maybe it’s just turning a corner into a little office space for you with a secretary desk?

We cleared it out, we painted the walls, painted the ceiling and it looks way different.It’s the first time that I’m experimenting with white walls so that’s….um….interesting.Apparently I don’t know how to play nice with white paint.

How to Design a Shared Family Room and PlayroomThis post was a part of CRI’s Beauty of Carpet campaign in 2016.Since kids spend lots of time on the floor on the floor, carpeting and rugs provide a soft surface for playtime.Research actually shows that carpet and rugs support healthier living spaces for everyone, including those with asthma and allergies.

Research shows that carpet, on the other hand, acts as a filter that traps allergens until they can be vacuumed up, resulting in fewer particles in the air.

Of course, regular vacuuming and cleaning of carpets is a must, and we avoid wearing shoes in our basement family room and play area in an effort to bring fewer allergens into the space.

Creating a Playroom out of our Dining Room

When creating the playroom, I hadn’t really considered this or taken it into consideration.So, the playroom kind of evolved over the past year or so into a dedicated space for the kids.

Well … let’s just say that with a four-year-old, a two-year-old and a 6-month-old that didn’t really work.

The room we chose to make into the playroom is the old formal dining room, but we didn’t give up our dining room entirely, we just moved it to the front of the house.In addition to this, the room we are now using as a dining room is actually one of the most beautiful spaces in our home, so why not share it with our guests when we are eating.

All Grown Up: Playroom to Dining Room Conversion

These before and after photos should have you giddy about the prospect of updating a kids old playroom into a more functional space in your home.In addition to the added ceiling trim and gold paint, we used deep and dramatic shades of blue as the neutral base in the dining room.

Contrary to popular belief, cool dark colors like navy make a room look and feel larger.The dark wallpaper in our client’s dining room creates the illusion that the walls are receding or tapering away from the viewer, yet the striking gold ceiling keeps the room grounded and intimate, so it doesn’t feel too big.

The “grasscloth” wallpaper is a durable, washable vinyl that only looks like grasscloth.

We decided to shake things up with our Design Agony series after the huge success of “Design Mistake: Too Much Furniture” post the other week.The more the merrier when it comes to creativity so bring on the comments and let’s help Kimberly and her family figure out their new living room.The heights and depths of these pieces are so similar that it makes this large space feel smaller by having one cabinet and door after the other.Moving the tall glass cabinet into the opposite corner allows more visual weight to disappear from the bay window area.

The chair and ottoman now live in the corner and to save some space Kimberly could add a plug-in sconce or a floor lamp with an attached side table.

Current Projects: A Durham Playroom Goes Back To School In Style

My clients in Durham had the idea of turning their big blah bonus room (you know the kind) into a library and playroom for their seven children.The color palette was inspired by a whimsical and colorful linen print from Clarence House in hues of orange, pink, yellow, and green.

The selection of the furniture pieces themselves- an orange loveseat (my personal favorite part of the space) a sectional sofa, entertainment unit, play table and chairs (existing), came naturally as they were both fun and functional.

Last week we joined up with a few of the kids for the photo shoot- it was fun to see them enjoying and using the space.

The dining room is on the other side of the front entry and faces the courtyard deck.The bookshelf that’s there right now is actually for C’s room and the rocking chair is meant for the living room on the main floor.

Lastly, to the left of the stairs we also have the laundry room – LOVE, LOVE, LOVE having our laundry upstairs!

The garage is barely a two car, but luckily has a really big (like meant to be a bedroom big) shop.

Spring cleaning: Organizing closets

These closets are where we store all of our out-of-season/special occasion clothing, coats, outgrown baby clothes, baby gear, blankets, etc.But lately, the closets had begun to look like this:and this:Not so pretty or functional, obviously.
